MLB Draft

The Major League Baseball draft (MLB Draft) is the main way through which the MLB selects amateur baseball players from high schools, colleges and other minor baseball teams to their teams.

The first MLB draft was held in 1965 and is typically held in the middle of an MLB season. Another main distinguishing feature it has compared to other American sports is that the MLB draft is larger than the other sports. It is held in 20 rounds under the collective agreement from 2021. Rick Monday was the first baseball player to ever get selected in the very first MLB draft, which was held on June 8, 1965.

For the 2023 MLB draft, a new lottery system has been introduced. This draft lottery was used to set a portion of the selection rounds. The first six selections for the draft are to be made by the lottery. Additionally, the picks for the remaining lottery participants are to be set in reverse order of the regular season winning percentage. Moreover, playoff teams will choose players based on revenue-sharing status, postseason finish and reverse order of winning percentage. This completes Round 1 of the MLB draft. For Round 2 and other subsequent rounds, both postseason finish and reverse order winning percentages will be used.

2023 MLB Draft dates and location

The 2023 MLB draft will be held between July 9, 2023 - July 11, 2023 in Seattle. It will lead up to the MLB All-Star Game in T-Mobile Park.

The Tickets for the 2023 MLB Draft have been made available. It costs $35.00 for a Standard Adult Ticket in General Admission Seating. Tickets are available to purchase through Ticketmaster.

MLB Draft Format 2023

The 2023 MLB draft is all set to begin this July. There has been a format set for the selection of the players into various teams. For this, Round 1 and Round 2 will be held on Sunday, July 9, 2023, starting at 7 p.m. E.T. Then, Round 3 to Round 10 will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023, at 2 p.m. E.T. Finally, the format of the draft will conclude on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 2 p.m. E.T. with Round 11 to Round 20.

Prospect Promotion Incentive Picks

The Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick is usually held after the first round. It is held when a player from a team is rated as a preseason Top 100 prospect by MLB pipeline, Baseball America and/or ESPN. Moreover, that player should also be on his team’s Opening Day roster and is awarded the Rookie of the Year Award. In such a case, that team gets the Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick. In 2023, the team is

Competitive Balance Round A

This round includes all the teams that have either one of the 10 smallest markets or 10 smallest revenue pools. These teams get an additional pick at the end of either first or second round. These picks can be traded but not forfeited. In 2023 MLB Draft, these teams are:
